Referendum: Without making a decision yet, the new Haitian Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, is inquiring about the draft of the new constitution

A matter of great concern for the Haitian people , the constitutional referendum project is not yet the subject of an official decision by the new Prime Minister Ariel Henry. However, the PM is inquiring about the process of the development of the new constitution.

The project of the new constitution is attracting the attention of the new Haitian Prime Minister, Ariel Henry. As part of his multiple discussions with the actors of the political and social life in Haiti, he met with the members of the Independent Advisory Committee for the elaboration of the new constitution this Thursday, July 29, 2021. As stated by the Prime Minister’s Office, “it is for the Head of Government to inquire about the state of this project which will be an item on the agenda of the national dialogue initiated with different sectors”.

In an interview with the newspaper Le Nouvelliste, Dr. Louis Naud Pierre, a member of the Independent Advisory Committee, confirmed the intention of the head of government to take part in this process. However, changes have been made to the old version. The Senate, once excluded in the drafting of the new constitution, will be involved .

Before the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, the Independent Advisory Committee (CCI) comité consultatif indépendant in French was to submit the final draft of the constitution and the report of the preparatory work on July 31, 2021. The independent advisory committee is still three working sessions short until completion of the draft .

From his installation until today, Ariel has already begun discussions with the various sectors of national life. In a press conference on Wednesday, July 28, 2021, he unveiled his plan of action . To hold elections is his top priorities.

The general elections and the constitutional referendum in Haiti are scheduled for a September 26, 2021. Apart from its proponents , this constitutional referendum is rejected by all sectors of Haitian society who see it as a “totalitarian” project , which should not be carried out . The U.S. administration is also opposed to its realization and the Core group reject it for “lack of transparency and credibility”.
